What is Financial Aid?
Student financial aid is assistance which helps pay the cost of education, for those who qualify. Funds included in this aid may be provided from several sources, including federal, state and private agencies. Most financial aid recipients receive a combination “package” comprised of more than one type of assistance program such as Federal Pell Grants and Federal Direct Student Loans. Grant aid is money that does not have to be repaid. Loan assistance includes borrowed money that will be repaid by the applicant.

Verification
You might see a note on your SAR saying you’ve been selected for verification; or your school might contact you to inform you that you’ve been selected. Verification is the process your school uses to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA form is accurate. If you’re selected for verification by the Department of Education, we will request additional documentation that supports the information you reported. Verification must be completed before any aid will be awarded. The financial aid officer will tell you what is required of you. If you used the Internal Revenue Service Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) when filling out your FAFSA form, you may not have to verify that information. In the following cases, however, your school may require you to submit an IRS tax transcript or a signed copy of your income tax return as part of the verification process: You didn’t use the IRS DRT, You used the IRS DRT and reported rollovers, or You used the IRS DRT but also amended your tax return. You can find your tax transcript through the IRS’s Get Transcript service at irs.gov/transcript.
